SEPAC Vatnajökull National Park
Landscape is the joint theme of the second issue of the SEPAC-nations. The third and last SEPAC-issue is due in 2011. The Icelandic stamps feature Skaftafell in the Vatnajökull National Park. The Vatnajökull National Park is the largest national park in Europe. It encompasses an area of 12.000 km2 or approximately 11% of Iceland. It will at first cover the national parks of Skaftafell and Jökulsárgljúfur and almost all of Vatnajökull glacier. The region contains a uniquely contrasting blend of natural beauty, active volcanism, geothermal energy and waterfalls. The creeping glaciers dominate the area – making it the easiest part of Iceland for glacier exploration. Skaftafell has some of the most diverse flora and fauna found in any part of the country, with protected species including growing stocks of Arctic fox and ptarmigan.
